Annapurna I (8,091 m) is the 10th highest mountain in the world. The trek to its base camp, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary trek, is 4,130 meters above sea level. This trek is famous for its rich culture and diverse landscapes, featuring picturesque Gurung and Magar villages, terraced fields, and breathtaking views of the mountains. The distinct heights and depths create a surprising diversity of ecosystems.
The southern section of the sanctuary is covered with tropical forests of rhododendron, oak, and bamboo, while towering mountains surround the northern part. As we ascend, the environment becomes drier and colder, causing vegetation to vanish almost completely.
The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek commences at Nayapul, about a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Pokhara. We pass through several Magar villages, including Birethanti, Sudame, Hile, Tikhedunga, Ulleri, Banthanti, and Nangethanti, before reaching Gorepani.
From Gorepani, we hike to Poon Hill to take in the stunning panoramic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,855 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Nilgiri (6,940 m), Tukuche Peak (6,920 m), Lamjung Himal (6,931 m), and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), among others.
Next, we hike to Chhomrong, passing through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests, terraced fields, and green hills. After descending to Chhomrong Khola, we ascend to Sinuwa, where we enter the cold forests of rhododendrons and bamboo, leading us to Bamboo.
The narrow trail between Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre along the Modi Khola takes us to Dovan, Himalaya, and Deurali, and finally to Annapurna Base Camp. The south face of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and the surrounding mountains captivate the eyes.
After spending time at the base camp, we trek back down to Chhomrong using the same trail. We then descend to Jhinu Danda, where we can relax in the natural hot springs. The gradual uphill trek continues to the beautiful Pothana village, and finally, we descend to Phedi. From there, we drive back to Pokhara.
